A couple are selling around 1,000 stately trees for Christmas to help fund the education of their 8 grandchildren.
Shawn and Bruce Carpenter, who live in rural Indiana, planted several thousand tiny trees a decade ago, reasoning that by the time they reach between 6 and 10 feet tall, their grandchildren will begin heading off to colleges and universities and would need a helping hand.
Around a thousand beautiful trees were ready for this year's holiday season, meaning that Bittersweet Farms is finally open for business. “It was an investment to help our grandkids for college,” Shawn Carpenter told the Herald Times. “One that’s taken awhile.”
“Bittersweet Farms Cut & Carry Christmas Trees for Sale” reads the sign the Carpenters put out on their road, inviting people to select their Christmas tree for the festive season.
So, how much are they likely to contribute towards their grandchildren's college fund? Well, this year, Pick Your Own Christmas Tree estimates that trees will likely cost around $13 per foot, but Bittersweet Farms has decided to be competitive and charge $10 per foot. If the Carpenters are able to sell half their total stock, they should rake in about $40,000. And then, of course, roughly the same again next year.
