Italian Court Orders Middle-Aged Sons To Leave Home

The hilariously absurd premise of the comedy movie Step Brothers may not be as far-fetched as we once thought.

In a recent legal ruling, an Italian court has mandated the eviction of two middle-aged men, aged 40 and 42, from their mother's residence in Pavia, just south of Milan in northern Italy, after the bamboccioni (big babies) refused to fly nest and ‘did not contribute’. The woman, who is separated from her husband, complained that they did not pay their share of household bills and refused to help out with housework, says The Telegraph.

Italy has a particularly high rate of adults, many in their 30s and 40s, who still live with their parents, but this elderly mother, aged 75, was forced to take drastic action after her two sons refused to abandon the comforts of the family home - despite both having jobs. “But neither of them wanted to know,” she said, according to a report in the local newspaper La Provincia Pavese.

In a sympathetic response to the woman's predicament, Judge Simona Caterbi issued an eviction order against her two sons late last month, saying that the “obligation of the parent to provide maintenance” was no longer warranted. The judge didn't call them bamboccioni but must have been sorely tempted.

The court has granted the brothers until 18 December to vacate the premises, reports The Guardian.
