From 1934 to 1936, Mercedes-Benz produced 342 500 K chassis. While customers could choose from various body types, just 29 were bodied as Roadsters. The Special Roadster design was even rarer and featured a “long-tail” style with a covered spare tire at the rear. This car is offered from a 12 year ownership during which time the owner had the vehicle meticulously restored and fitted with a Special Roadster body.

The current owner purchased the car in 2012 from a Danish baron and had a Special Roadster body constructed to factory specification. Various specialists were commissioned to work on the vehicle over a seven year period.

The owner says, “The styling of the Special Roadster is one of what I consider the top five automotive designs ever created.”

The original 5 liter straight-eight engine has also been meticulously restored and the owner says, “It drives like a dream. The odometer reads 74,266km, because it sat for decades in storage. I can’t say for sure, but that’s probably correct mileage.” Since its restoration was complete, the 500 K has been driven around 150 miles and attended 11 shows, picking up four “Best in Show” awards amongst other accolades.

The 1934 Mercedes-Benz 500 K Special Roadster is being auctioned over a two week period with Bring A Trailer. The auction is due to conclude 29 October. At time of writing, the current leading bid stands at $800,000.
