Keeping the week on track with today's global bundle of positive news stories.
Fiery Rainbow
BBC Weather Watchers in Scotland have been captivated by the sight of pink rainbows at sunset over the past few days. For some parts they brought some much-needed colour to otherwise rather dull, drizzly summer days. This picture of a "fiery rainbow" was taken at Loch na Keal on Mull in Argyll. Meanwhile, not far away...
Banter Merchant
A Glasgow hotel is looking to hire a "banter merchant" to entertain guests throughout Edinburgh Festival Fringe. AC Hotel by Marriott Glasgow said it is seeking a "breakfast roaster" to leave its guests "in stitches" during the famous event - even though it is 45 miles from Edinburgh, the hotel says it is getting an uptick in bookings during the festival. The paid gig - which would suit someone performing at the Fringe - includes free accommodation and travel expenses to and from Scotland's capital for the festival. The job ad states that the selected applicant will be the "toast of the hotel, transforming ordinary mornings into laugh-a-minute experiences and setting the perfect tone for the day ahead. Are you a laugh-a-minute lady? A witty wise guy? A rib-tickling rebel? A banter merchant? A comedian, in other words? Then your dream role may be just a scroll away," the advert says.
Photo Record
A team of imaging experts, scientists and historians has set sail from Providence, Rhode Island en route to the Titanic in order to gather the most detailed photographic record ever made of the wreck. They'll be using state of the art technology to scan every nook and cranny of the famous liner to gain new insights into its sinking. Two robotic vehicles will dive to the ocean bottom to capture millions of high-resolution photographs and to make a 3D model of all the debris. "We want to see the wreck with a clarity and precision that's never before been achieved," explained co-expedition lead David Gallo.
Goodbye Pedals
Push to accelerate, pull to brake? New steering yoke ditches pedals. Stellantis - the conglomerate parent company of Fiat, Chrysler, and the French PSA Group - has filed a patent for what appears to be a yoke-style steering-throttle-braking type of steering "wheel/control", similar to Tesla's approach to the steering-yoke, but deleting the foot controls altogether. Goodbye brake pedal, goodbye accelerator pedal.
Peak Oil
Oil and gas company BP’s Energy Outlook: 2024 Edition predicts that peak global oil demand will occur next year, putting a stop to increasing carbon emissions as solar and wind continue to expand.
Looks Like Love
An Ed Sheeran superfan has married a professional Ed Sheeran lookalike. Amanda and Ty Baron-Jones met at a Sheeran gig, and married in Manchester at a wedding filled with other lookalikes, including David Beckham, Prince Harry, Jack Sparrow and Gordon Ramsay. The couple walked down the aisle to Sheeran's song One Life, and had the songwriter's lyrics etched onto their cake. "It was the best day of my life," said Amanda.
